THE BRITTANY

For starters, it is NOT Brittany Spaniel, but just plain Brittany...the name changed in 1982 when discussions were made that this dog was a pointing dog more than a flushing dog so should not be lumped into the spaniel category! However in most other countries it does remain with the Spaniel attached to the end..(ie France and the UK)

GENERAL APPEARANCE: This dog is medium sized with a lean, but strong body.

COAT: Fine but not silky, can be dead straight or wavey..not curly.  Can have long feathering on backs of front legs and top or hind legs.  Pets can be kept in a short trim clip or left to grow.  I nice thorough brush once or twice a week is fine.  You will find once mud dries the dirt will just fall out and off the coat.

Colours: Can vary,  Orange and White, Liver and White, and Tricolour.  They can be roan as well...(more flickers of colour through coat)

Height: Dogs, 48cm to 50cm ideal

Bitches, 48cm to 49cm ideal

Temperament: A social animal that can adapt itself to most environments, very intelligent, attractive and mentally balanced.  May take a few years to 'grow up' and needs to be kept stimulated to get the best out of. (not a dog to just be put in a backyard and forgotten about..great for and dog sports or hunting...

Lifespan: 12-14 years

The Brittany is a beautiful dog to look at, all elegant grace and when it points...perfection!  A happy- go-lucky dog that dosn't take kindly to harsh treatment or repremanding.  Positive training works amazingly well with these dogs.

They are fast learners and thrive like any 'thinking' dog on being taught how to do things.  They exceed at Agility, Obedience, and of course Hunting and Trials.

They can be great with families but beware those with younger, smaller children.  This breed, if not trained consistantly can be a tad wild and overexcited -  jumping up and knocking over children. (not with any harm, just happiness!)  As with any dog training is the key.  They can take a few years to 'grow up' as well and this is best kept in mind when looking at one as a pet.  Many dogs are rehomed or abandoned for this between the ages of 12 months and 3 years.

Helen at "Rivamist Brittanys" sometimes knows of dogs and bitches to be rehomed - check my links
